Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan De Winter on defending his PhD
We are proud to announce that Jonathan De Winter successfully defended his PhD thesis on June 19th, 2025 at the University of Antwerp’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

His doctoral research, titled “Genetic insights in hereditary neurological and neuromuscular disorders: spectrins bridge neurons to muscles” offers important contributions to our understanding of inherited neuromuscular conditions. Through cutting-edge genetic analyses, his work has helped unravel the role of SPTAN1 variants in distal myopathy and contributed to improved diagnostic insight in patients with rare hereditary disorders.

Jonathan conducted his research within the Translational Neurosciences group and the Laboratory of Neuromuscular Pathology at the Institute Born-Bunge (IBB), and supported by the Goldwasser Foundation’s Emsens Doctoral fellowship. His work exemplifies IBB’s mission to bridge molecular diagnostics, clinical neurology, and neuropathology, translating scientific discovery into improved care for patients affected by complex neurological conditions.
We warmly congratulate Dr. De Winter, his supervisor Prof. Jonathan Baets, and the entire research team on this important milestone!
